Joel Francis Murray Law, P.S. (d/b/a “JFM Law”) is a Washington State based law firm that was founded in early 2019 by attorney Joel Murray. The firm offers legal counsel and services on matters involving administrative law and appeals of rulings from state and federal agencies, agricultural law, business law, civil and commercial litigation, education law, election and political law, employment law, entertainment law, local government and land use law, liquor and cannabis law, trademark law, transportation law, tax law and tribal law.
Following graduation from law school in 2011, Joel joined a business-oriented law firm based out of downtown Bellevue, Washington. There, he was exposed to a wide variety of practice areas with a primary focus on legal issues affecting small- and medium-sized businesses, investors and owners of closely held corporations (S-Corporations), and often, relatively obscure areas of law practice.
During law school, Joel served as a law clerk for the Tulalip Tribes as well as with Sound Transit, and completed an externship and fellowship in the United States Senate, which included working on Senator Tom Harkin’s (D-IA) investigation into for-profit colleges and universities.
Joel is a graduate of the University of Washington, Bachelor of Arts (“B.A.”), Economics, Political Science with Distinction, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Masters of Science (“MSc”), Philosophy and Public Policy. There he studied a combination of economics, philosophy, politics, and public policy. His thesis there was a critique of socialist economic theory. Having grown up in family that owned a small business, Joel understands the challenges that face businesses of all sizes
Thereafter, Joel attended the University of California at Davis School of Law, Juris Doctorate (“J.D.”) where he was honored to serve on the UC Davis Law Review. Due to chairing a national political organization, Joel spent his final year of law of law school in Washington, District of Columbia, and visited at the Georgetown University Law Center during his final semester of law school, Joel authored two articles that were published in national legal journals, and has taught multiple continuing legal education seminars ( “CLEs”).
Over the years, Joel has served in a variety of community and leadership-oriented positions. He served as student body president of his high school. As an undergraduate at the University of Washington, he chaired a 30,000 member plus registered student organization that focused on increased federal and state funding for higher education, was actively in student government, served as vice-president of his fraternity, and worked on multiple statewide ballot measure campaigns supporting K-12 and higher education.
Throughout his life, Joel has been interested in local, state and national politics. Accordingly, he has developed relationships with former and current local, state and federal elected officials. Having run a national political organization during law school, Joel continues to be active in state as well as federal politics, and maintains relationships with Democratic, Independent and Republican current and former elected officials, pundits, and other politically engaged individuals.
Outside of practicing law, Joel’s interests include Husky football, golf, foreign affairs and international relations, trying to “keep up” with new “technology”, mixed-use development and “new urbanism”.
